Inside Story Of Android Dev Summit 2021: Jetpack Compose, Material You, Android 12l, And Much More

Android Dev Summit 2021

Android development has come a long way since its inception. The platform has grown across many areas. There are so many new tools, techniques, and android frameworks that keep evolving, allowing worldwide developers to create impeccable app experiences. If you have been practicing MAD, by which I mean Modern Android Development, you cannot miss out on the news this post revolves around.

Android Dev Summit 2021 sparked off with the keynote triggering the year’s theme “excellent apps, across devices.” In addition to that, they announced the latest modern Android development offering like Jetpack Compose (Android’s modern native UI), now with Material You. Exciting, right?

However, that’s not the whole story. The Android event also pitches the ability to extend your apps across billions of Android devices, from wearables to large screens coupled with a developer preview of an Android 12 feature focused on foldable, large screens, and tablets, called 12L.

So, what you want is to buckle up. This blog will focus on the Android dev summit 2021 highlights. We will see what new has been brought to Android app development, including Jetpack Compose, Material You, 12L OS for large screen developers, and more.

Jetpack Compose With Material You

As you know, Material You is the subsequent evolution of Material Design. In contrast, Jetpack Compose is a modern toolkit of Android for building native UI, which is now stable and production-ready, offering new functionality and performance improvements.

Now, the Android team has released compose-material3: a brand new artifact for building native UIs with Jetpack Compose. With the update comes improved components and color system, together with support for dynamic color, creating a personalized color palette.

Consequently, the duo enables another level of personalization across interfaces, enabling visualizing dynamic color and seeing changes reflected all through the app’s UI.

New Operating System 12L For Larger Screens Coupled With The Latest Tools

92% YOY growth in Chrome OS, 20% growth in tablets, and 2.5X growth in foldable devices sales accumulate over 250M active large-screen Android devices. Seeing those figures, the Android team has provided developers with a preview of an upcoming feature drop concerning Android 12.

The update is added for large screens only. Hence, they call it 12L. You can find an optimized and polished UI system for large screens with the Android 12L. It will boost the multitasking and compatibility support for apps to look elegant.

Building Android Apps For All Sizes And Shapes

As Android runs on devices of all sizes and shapes, the team has extended the experience. Now you can continue your user engagement beyond the phone to an entire ecosystem of devices, including TVs, wearables, and even cars.

For the wearable OS, they have leveled up their collaboration with Samsung and mobile and launched an entirely new version of the OS. Besides, you can create more prosperous and more immersive app experiences for wearables with Google Play, YouTube Music, Spotify, Strava, Calm, and much more.

On the other hand, they have launched the most awaited Android phone remote control feature for Android TVs. Lastly, for Android Auto, there is valuable support to keep track while driving, including navigation, EV charging, and parking.

Android Dev Summit Introduces New Tools To Google Play

Google Play has been committed to offering a safe and secure platform for app developers and billions of users. Henceforth, earlier this year, they referred to the data safety section in the play store, which will be seen from February. The section will inform users what type of data the app collects, stores, and uses. Thereby, developers can be more transparent about their approach to user privacy.

Another Google Play feature is a Play Integrity API to protect apps and games from fraudulent traffic, unauthorized access, tampering, etc. Furthermore, the API will help identify if the backend is interacting with the genuine binary on a genuine Android device and is installed by Play.

Not to mention, new features of the API are completely supported by Google Play. It is noteworthy that it replaces the Play app licensing and SafetyNet device attestation API. However, the Play Integrity API is being tested and will be available over the next few months.

Wrap up

It’s not everything, though. There is a lot going on in the Android landscape. The team is trying hard to elevate the performance and experience of Android apps across devices of all shapes and sizes.
